Tracy Kijewski-Correa leads the Structural DYNamics And MOnitoring (DYNAMO) Laboratory, which is dedicated to addressing 21st Century Civil Infrastructure Challenges posed by increased urbanization and hazard vulnerability, using inter-disciplinary collaborations and context-driven technologies. DYNAMO Lab is founded on over a decade of experience in full-scale monitoring of urban environments, coupled with development of cyberinfrastructure and engineering virtual organizations like CyberEye that present new paradigms for cyber-collaboration and crowd-sourcing of engineering tasks including citizen “sensing” for natural hazard mitigation, post-disaster response, and distributed sensing of infrastructure to enhance societal resilience. Dr. Kijewski-Correa has had particular interest in the impact of disasters on the developing world, including examining sustainable and culturally appropriate housing designs in the wake of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami in Thailand and Indonesia and in Leogane, Haiti, the effective epicenter of the 2010 Earthquake. The latter has led to a new sustainable model for low-income housing, currently being implemented under the banner of Engineering2Empower (E2E)

Associate Director, Data Intake and Discovery: Andrew Kennedy

Andrew Kennedy leads the Coastal Engineering Laboratory, which studies engineering and geophysical problems at the coastal margins. Topics of interest include wave transformation and effects, storm surge and damage, and morphological development in the near shore. Approaches are both experimental and computational, ranging from deployment of wave and surge gauges prior to hurricanes, to simulation of wave transformation and near shore hydrodynamics using advanced models, to intensive studies of structural damage from wave and surge during coastal storms. CyberEyeis to serve as a repository for much of the data taken during Dr. Kennedy’s (and others’) field studies, including results from Hurricanes Ike and Sandy, and Super Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda.

Associate Director, Rapid Risk Assessment: Alexandros Taflanidis

Alexandros Taflanidis leads the High Performance System Analysis and Design (HIPAD) Laboratory. His research focuses on the implementation of advanced computational and simulation-based methodologies and on integration of high-performance and soft computing approaches for assessment and mitigation of risk due to natural hazards (such as earthquakes, waves and hurricanes), for development of sustainable civil infrastructures, and for the robust analysis and design of engineering systems. His work also extends to assessing and enhancing hazard-resilience of communities in the developing world. The latter efforts have led to a new sustainable model for low-income housing, currently being implemented under the banner of Engineering2Empower (E2E) in Leogane, Haiti.

Charles Vardeman is a Computational Scientist who builds cyberinfrastructure, computational tools and frameworks for engineers and scientists, including collaborative data exploration platforms. He is also an active participant in the geoSpatial semantic web community developing Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs) to allow scientists to discover, integrate and utilize heterogeneous big data sets into scientific models, as co-organizer of the Descartes-Core effort to publish ODPs
